Jaylib was formed in 2002 as Madlib + Dilla recorded separately in Los Angeles + Detroit. Their one album, Champion Sound, was released in 2003. When J Dilla moved to Los Angeles, he, Madlib + J Rocc began doing shows together as Jaylib, performing together for the first time at the Madvillain record release party in April 2004.
Madlib + Dilla collaborated primarily through the exchange of beat tapes, occasionally reworking each others material, or chopping the same beat in a kind of recorded call-and-response.
Dilla rant this is not. The music speaks for itself.
The distinction and calibre of the few musicians selected to reinterpret Dilla's music speaks to the reverence beheld for Dilla. The exactitude in the interpolations and their austerity present further dispositions of Dilla's innate genius.
Timeless and spoke for (through music), I present "Untitled/Fantastic" variegated.
I'm usually critical of Pharrell genuflecting production credit to Chad (Pharrell + Chad= the Neptunes) but here Pharrell's signature production anchors in nostalgia that made the Clipse: Grindin' a Top 10.
Common lays concrete with on Announcement with his rhymes and keeps his promise dismissing Yezzy (Kanye) due to his hyper-braggadocio whereby he credits himself for the successes of Common’s last two albums even though much of the production style is in the breathe of J Dilla (James Yancey) and done so in Jay Dee’s honor (on Be half of the album was supposed to be produced by 'Dilla however his hospitalization impeaded that and more notably on Finding Forever posthumously) - effer...
Kanye, the world waits on no one - you pastel-wearing monkey.
In late 2005 Ghostface Killa and MF DOOM were both recording over tracks from J Dilla's instrumental opus, Donuts, which saw release the following February. Some of these were released on Ghostface's Fishscale in 2006, while others, including a Dilla-Doom project, were postponed indefinitely after J Dilla's passing. Two of these tracks, “Sniper Elite” and “Murder Goons,” are presented here for the first time. The two are taken from two sequential songs off Donuts, meant to mix together. We are presenting the two songs unmixed, plus the two mixed together as a bonus track. Listen to samples and/or buy individual MP3s (360 kbps, non-DRM): Exclusive digital releases: 99¢ x 3 tracks.

New sites cater to the discriminating consumer of online rap
Hip-hop singles are top sellers at iTunes, but the genre’s albums sell poorly online — only seven percent of hip-hop full-lengths sold are downloaded, versus ten percent of albums overall. Still, indie-rap fans are a different breed. “They’re buying complete albums — they have favorites, they can name the classics,” says Jay Andreozzi, general manager of Amalgam Digital. Below, a few new sites catering to indie-rap consumers.
This indie label/retailer, which sells unprotected MP3s, makes deals with artists to offer albums with exclusive bonus tracks and videos. They recently signed ex-Def Jam MC Joe Budden (above) and released his digital-only album, Mood Muzik 3.5, with a cappella versions of all the songs. The site is also packed with intel for hip-hop heads, including interviews with artists such as Wale and Ill Bill.
When Las Vegas record store HipHopSite closed last year, the operation moved online, building an impressive digital-download outlet. The exclusive stock includes singles and digi-LPs and -EPs from the likes of Talib Kweli and J Dilla, and digital-only mixtapes, including the “Preemptive Hype” series, featuring and KRS-One, Common and Method Man.
This iconic label’s site is home to a wealth of downloads from the biggest names in indie rap: and Aesop Rock, El-P, RJD2 and more. Though it already hosts exclusive tracks and EPs by these artists, the site will expand to include releases from other indie labels later this year.
“The homie Busta Rhymes called me the other day following up on an idea I gave him months and months ago. So long ago that I actually forgot about it. He called me with four very specific words: “Check your inbox, son!” When I opened it, I found song after song of unreleased craziness from Busta and the late, legendary J Dilla. So after a week of figuring out our strategy, it’s done. Mick Boogie + Busta + Dilla = Dillagence. The album of the year…and it’s not even an album!”
Stones Throw is teaming up with video game trendsetters 2K Sports to present the soundtrack for the latest in 2K’s series, NBA 2K8. Stones Throw president Peanut Butter Wolf has compiled B-Ball Zombie War, a 20-song companion piece to the video game. The album and the game will be released October 2nd.
B-Ball Zombie War features new collaborations by Talib Kweli, Q-Tip and MF Doom over beats by J Dilla, as well as new tracks by Madlib, Guilty Simpson, Aloe Blacc, Koushik, and MED among others. New names are introduced, including Karriem Riggins and Madlib’s group Supreme Team.
This will be the first Stones Throw collaboration with another brand since last year’s Chrome Children compilation with Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. Stones Throw is best known for its work with Madlib, J Dilla and MF Doom.
In 2003, J Dilla was better known as Jay Dee, a Detroit producer who shunned publicity but was widely respected in hip-hop; Madlib was an up-and-coming L.A. producer making a name for himself with his wild diversity, from rap (Quasimoto) to electronic jazz (Yesterdays New Quintet) to remixes (Shades of Blue (Blue Note, 2003)). At the time of Champion Sound's original release in late 2003, J Dilla and Madlib had never been photographed together or appeared as a group in public. In the years that followed, this changed drastically – after Dilla's move to Los Angeles, the two worked together, communicated through hip-hop beat tapes, and toured together as Jaylib. Madlib's profile rose with his MF DOOM-collab Madvillain (soundscan 93k). J Dilla, though dealing with a serious illness, continued crafting material for artists such as Common and Busta Rhymes while working on a wealth of solo material. Dilla's final albums – Donuts (Stones Throw, 2006), The Shining (BBE, 2006) – along with the re-issue of Ruff Draft (Stones Throw, 2007) have introduced his name and music to countless new fans while publications from The Source to Rolling Stone paid respect to his musical genius. Many felt that Champion Sound wasn't given the attention it deserved when it was originally released. In preparing the album for reissue with b-sides, instrumentals, and later photos of the group, Madlib quietly presented the label with a collection of new Jaylib remixes. These 9 remixes, together with b-sides and the instrumentals - 43 tracks in all - are collected in this deluxe 2-CD set, selling for the same price as the original Champion Sound CD, delayed in the pressing, slated for June 12, 2007, are collected here together for the first time in this deluxe 2-CD set.

Phat Kat: True Story Pt. 2 From: Carte Blanche (Look, Apr. 24, 2007) (Advance)
I was first introduced to Phat Kat through Jay Dee’sWelcome 2 Detroit (BBE, Feb. 27, 2001). My sister, Double N G Dukes, and I immediately became Phat Kat fans. Double N G Dukes spoke with Phat Kat at one of his performances. Her conversation abounded with accolades for Phat Kat. His recent work at times has suffered from his acerbic tone whereby his battle rap gansterisms compromise his flow and word pairing. That said, I’m still a fan oscillating when his music is on. His AllHipHop (AHH) feature interview: Phat Kat: The Upside of Anger by Omar Burgess is a Phat Kat Cliffs Notes biography which delineates his:
first group “1st Down” with Jay Dee,
first record deal with Pay Day via a chance-meeting with Gang Starr,
Okayplayer tour and his pending release: Carte Blanche on April 24, 2007.
This copy of True Story Pt. 2 is an advance with slight audio inconsistencies. My assumption is these sonic blemishes will encourage legitimate purchasing…

Two years ago, when Congress passed a law to extend daylight saving time by a month, the move seemed a harmless step that would let the nation burn a little less fossil fuel and enjoy a bit more sunshine.
The change took effect Sunday, daylight saving time began three weeks earlier (and ends a week later, on the first Sunday in November). This puts the United States out of sync with the rest of the world for longer than usual this spring, almost certainly disrupting not only computers but also the business and travel schedules of companies, workers and travelers. Most of Europe goes to daylight saving time March 25, two weeks after America, while most of Asia, Africa and South America do not observe daylight saving time at all.
The daylight-time shift, according to technology executives and analysts, amounts to a “mini-Y2K.” That is a reference to the rush in the late 1990s to change old software, which was unable to recognize dates in the new millennium, 2000 and beyond.
The fear was that computers would go haywire, and there were warnings of planes falling from the skies and electronic commerce grinding to a halt. Billions of dollars were invested to fix the so-called millennium bug, and there was no wave of computer-related disasters.
This time, with extended daylight saving time, the problem is subtler. The potential pitfall is a disruption of business, if the clocks inside all kinds of hardware and software systems do not sync up as they are programmed to do. In a business world that is increasingly computerized and networked, there could be effects on everything from programmed stock trading to just-in-time manufacturing to meeting schedules.
For consumers, the greatest potential impact will be on e-mail and calendar programs like Microsoft Outlook, used to schedule dentist visits, soccer practices, evening entertainment and other appointments.
The latest Windows operating system, Vista, is not affected, and for those running Windows XP Service Pack 2, online software updates have been pushed out automatically to correct the problem. Microsoft and Apple are also making software patches and instructions available on their Web sites.
For the roughly 7,000 public companies in the United States, Mr. Hammond estimates the total cost of making computer fixes to deal with the daylight saving time shift at more than $350 million.
The energy savings from extending daylight time are not great, but could mount, according to studies. A report last year by the Energy Department projected savings in electricity at four-tenths of a percent each day of extended daylight savings time — or three one-hundredths of a percent of annual electricity use. Daylight saving time modestly reduces evening electricity use.
Still, tiny savings each year could add up in the long run. The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, a nonprofit group, estimates that the cumulative benefit through 2020 of longer daylight saving time would be a saving of $4.4 billion and 10.8 million metric tons less carbon spewed into the air.
The 2005 energy bill gives Congress the option of repealing the daylight saving time extension, if energy savings are not achieved.
A leitmotif (IPA pronunciation: [laɪt məʊ tɪəf]) (also leitmotiv; lit. "leading motif") is a recurring musicaltheme, associated within a particular piece of music with a particular person, place or idea. The word has also been used by extension to mean any sort of recurring theme, whether in music, literature, or the life of a fictional character or a real person.
Although usually a short melody, it can also be a chordprogression or even a simple rhythm. Leitmotifs can help to bind a work together into a coherent whole, and also enable the composer to relate a story without the use of words, or to add an extra level to an already present story.
The word is usually used when talking about dramatic works, especially operas, although leitmotifs are also used in other musical genres, such as instrumental pieces, cinema, and video game music.
The word itself has a mixed etymology, as a further meaning to the German word Motiv was borrowed in the 18th century from the Frenchmotif, meaning "motive" or "theme", while the German word Motiv itself can be traced back to the 16th century, meaning only "motive" (cf. Latin motivus). Prefixing it with leit- (coming from the German leiten, "to lead"), produces Leitmotiv (German plural: Leitmotive), meaning "leading motif".
Leitmotifs are very common in movie scores; a well known example is the Star WarsImperial March associated with Darth Vader and his previous self, Anakin Skywalker, in the Star Wars series of films composed by John Williams. Themes for the characters Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Emperor Palpatine, and Yoda also recur throughout the movies. John Williams also composed music for Jaws and the Indiana Jones films that uses leitmotifs. Lara's Theme in the film Dr. Zhivago is another example of this.
A: "There's nothing more precious than my Coogi's..." Fast-forward to R.J. Rice Studios commercial where spray-painted graffiti lists groups who've procured Rice's services - one such group was SlumVillage who were introduced to Jay Dee by Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest. Busta Rhymes: Woo-Hah!! Maxi-Single introduced me to the late Jay Dee: Hip Hop's Shy Giant. On this work J Dilla remixed both: "WOO-HAH!! Got You All In Check - The Jay Dee Bounce Remix" (the remix instrumental is also included on the maxi-single) and "WOO-HAH!! Got You All In Check - The Jay Dee Other Shit Remix featuring Rampage The Last Boy Scout" (my favorite of the two). When artistry sways me to interest I, commonly, inherently delve into the entire body of work of said artist. As foretold, habitually, I systematized my "Jay Dee", as was his foremost moniker, assemblage. My collection includes several instrumental shorts that I have never heard before be they offered by Detroit sources (Waajeed/Bling47 or otherwise), audioblogs or radio: local, foreign (including BBC 1Xtra's: Benji B nor Gilles Peterson) or pirated (although such offering(s) could have escaped me - however; my doubt is elephantine). As a consequence of never having a reference for these songs (three (3) of thirty-four (34) previously unreleased songs - oddly all starting with "S") I have named them arbitrarily - as slapdash (no offense intended as I too am guilty) as did DJ O-Dub - such nomenclature is inadvertently artificial. In advance I apologize for any perceived adulteration of J Dilla's music. *Arvo - afternoon (Australian) *Arvo arriver - afternoon shorts *James Yancey/ Jay Dee/ J Dilla (1974-2006)
With all of the events happening around the world to celebrate the life and music of J Dilla, Stone Throws interviewed a few people who knew and worked with him. Stone Throws will be releasing these in a series. Part 1:

The group name Alphabet Soup is explained as follows:
The communicative rudiments of language starts with the alphabet. The alphabet is a set of letters and/or other characters written or otherwise (oral-tradition, etc.) arranged in a customary order to convey knowledge or inform. The "Soup" was our music. Together the compliment of both words (alphabet) and music rendered the EP: Sunny Day In Harlem.
Holden Caulfield is a fictional character created by J. D. Salinger. Holden is the teenage protagonist of Salinger's 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye ; Holden also appears in some of Salinger's other literary works.
Physically, Holden is gangly and tall. He is also described as having several gray hairs on the right side of his head. These two qualities contribute to Caulfield's appearing to be older than his age, yet his mannerisms and behavior contradict that impression. One of Caulfield's most striking and quintessential qualities is his powerful revulsion for "phony" human qualities. Qualities such as narcissism, hypocrisy, and superficiality embody Holden's concept of phoniness; and, unfortunately, Holden is adept at realizing these qualities in other people. This serves to bolster Holden's cynicism and consequently contributes to his mistrust of other people. Interestingly, despite Holden's strong disdain for phony qualities, he exhibits some of the qualities that he abhors, thereby making him a somewhat tragic character.
Caulfield is the second of four children, with two brothers, D.B. and Allie, and one sister, Phoebe. (There is also a second sister, Viola, who is briefly mentioned in the short story "I'm Crazy," but is never referred to again.) Allie is deceased at the time of The Catcher in the Rye. Their parents are left unnamed in Salinger's works.
Born into a life of wealth and privilege, Caulfield looks down upon the elite world he occupies. He questions the values of his class and society and sometimes appears to oppose conventions merely for the sake of opposition. He is widely considered to be the template for the "angry young man" archetype.
Accordingly, my man "2-Liter" considers my acerbic critiques a "hate" of everything and my "can't fuck with me B!!!" dancing rants didn't/ don't exactly raise the bar thusly "2-Liter" has thereupon labeled me the consummate Holden Caulfield of the east-coast.
